GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman stifled Western Carolina, 5-2, Wednesday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
The Paladins (4-6, 2-0 SoCon) won two out of three doubles matches to clinch the opening point. Sophomores Jess Dawson and Sara Snyder, who rank 51st nationally, defeated Isabella Sambola and Madison Schwarz, 6-3, at flight one, and the Catamounts' Jade Groen and Andrea Redondo teamed up for a 6-2 victory over senior Madison Dillon and freshman Luca Victoria Vocke. In the decisive number two contest, sophomores Marissa Pennings and Ellie Schulson downed Dasha Osadova and Angela Perez, 6-2.Â
Furman won four singles matches for the victory. Schulson held off Sambola, 6-4, 7-6(6), at flight one, and Pennings won over Schwarz in the third set, 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-3, at flight two. At flight five, Dillon came from behind to beat Redondo, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(5), and at number six, Vocke blew past Osadova, 6-1, 6-0. Â
The Catamounts (5-4) scored at flights three and four. Groen topped Dawson in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(6), at number three, and Perez defeated Snyder, 6-2, 6-0, at number four.Â
Furman will compete at the prestigious Blue Gray Tournament in Montgomery, Ala., Friday and Saturday.
