Emme Buzhardt tossed a complete game in the opener and junior
Sierra Tufts fired a one-hit, shutout in the nightcap to lead Furman to a doubleheader sweep of Charleston Southern, 6-2, 7-0, on Saturday at Pepsi Stadium.
In the opening game of the day, Buzhardt (2-4) bounced back from two early runs to blank the Buccaneers over the final four frames to claim her second straight victory in the circle. She allowed two runs on three hits over seven innings while fanning five CSU batters.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Furman started its rally with a
Hana Suniga walk and
Chloe Fabio single. Lykins singled through the left side to plate one run and Fabio raced home on a throw down to second when Lykins attempted to swipe a bag. After
Ainsley Yoshizumi singled,
Riley Ludlam mashed a doubled into the right-center field gap to score the junior from first and give the Paladins a 3-2 lead.
Furman added to its lead the following inning.
Kaitlyn Laudick and Suniga delivered consecutive singles to right field before
Sylvia Burroughs launched a pinch-hit, three-run blast to left to up the margin to 6-2.
Lykins, Ludlam, and Fabio each notched a pair of hits to lead Furman's 11-hit attack in game one while Burroughs tallied three RBIs.
Annah Junge (8-2) suffered the loss for Charleston Southern (9-11) after allowing six runs on 11 hits over six innings. Leadoff hitter Ashley Meckley collected two hits and Harper Schoeneweis batted in two runs for the Bucs.
Tufts dominated the nightcap to improve to 4-6 in the circle. The Chula Vista, Calif., native allowed just a third-inning single and fanned four over seven innings to earn the victory and complete the sweep.
Ludlam put Furman ahead with an RBI single in the first inning and
Kiley Perry doubled the lead with a solo blast over the scoreboard in left-center field to leadoff the bottom of the third. The Paladins erupted for five runs in the fourth inning. A walk to Fabio and single by
Ashlee Lykins opened the frame before Ludlam drove in another run with a base hit. Perry singled to up the lead to 4-0 and Burroughs worked a walk to load the bases before
Hannah Pooled lined a three-run double past the right fielder to blow the game open.
For the game, Perry went 4-for-4 with a homer, two runs, and two RBIs. Lykins and Ludlam each collected two hits as the Paladins finished with 12 safeties in game two.
Riley Lauffler (1-9) suffered the defeat for the Bucs after giving up seven runs on 12 hits over six innings in the circle.
Furman (7-16) returns to the road when it visits Athens, Ga., to face the Georgia Bulldogs on Wednesday, March 15. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
