Blacksburg, Va. – Olivia Vergano totaled five points to lead the Virginia Tech Hokies to a 17-11 victory over the Furman women's lacrosse team in the Paladins' final non-conference game of the season, Monday afternoon at Thompson Field.
Virginia Tech improves to 9-7 overall while Furman drops to 7-7 on the season.
The Hokies used an 11-2 run that covered nearly 19 minutes to go ahead 16-5 with 11:30 remaining in the contest. The Paladins, after falling behind 4-0 to start the contest, scored three of the next four from
Anna Roser and
Hannah Dintino to cut their deficit down to 5-3 at the 9:39 mark of the second quarter.
Following Maura O'Malley's goal to give Virginia Tech the 11-goal lead, Furman closed out the contest on a 6-2 run. The Paladins started the run by netting four consecutive goals to make the score 16-9. Roser scored two of the goals during the run while
Meagan Beal and
Sophie Shaw both added one.
Vergano picked up her fourth goal of the game with 4:15 left in regulation to increase the Hokies' lead to 17-9. Dintino and
Molly Faul would then post back-to-back goals over the final 2:30 to put the final score at 17-11.
Offensively, Roser led Furman with five points on three goals and two assists. Dintino added a hat trick while Faul and Shaw each contributed two goals. Shaw would go on to win a team high six draws and Dintino tied her career best of four ground balls.
Abby Shearer provided two caused turnovers. In goal,
Lily Rathbun finished with 12 saves, two ground balls, and one caused turnover.
Vergano paced Virginia Tech's offense with five points on four goals and one assist. O'Malley, Ella Rishko, and Paige Tyson all scored hat tricks. Claire Schotta dished out two assists. In goal, Lilly Kannapell and Jocelyn Torres combined for five saves.
The Paladins, who forced the Hokies into 12 turnovers, concluded the game with 10 draws and held a 12-9 advantage in ground balls.
Furman plays its final home game of the season Saturday afternoon when it hosts Gardner-Webb for Senior Day at 1 p.m.
