Greenville, S.C. – Chattanooga scratched across a run in the top of the ninth inning to edge Furman, 5-4, and complete a three-game sweep of the Paladins on Sunday afternoon in Southern Conference softball action at Pepsi Stadium.
Addy Keylon singled to start the ninth inning, stole second base, and moved to third base on a grounder before scoring when Presley Williamson's bouncer to second baseman
Chrissy Fleming was misplayed. Alyssa Lavdis retired the Paladins in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn her second victory of the series and up her record in the circle to 6-1. She surrendered just one earned run on five hits over 5.1 innings out of the bullpen.
Chattanooga's (24-22, 7-8 SoCon) Kaili Phillips led off the game with a homer and Olivia Lipari delivered a two-out, two-run single to center field in the top of the fourth to push the Mocs' lead to 3-0. Furman answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame.
Caitlin Goldwait reached on a single and
Ashlee Lykins drew a walk and stole a base before the pair scored on a passed ball and wild pitch, respectively.
After Lykins scored from first base on a throwing error to tie the game in the sixth inning, Chattanooga regained the advantage in the top of the seventh. An error, hit batter, and base on balls set the table for Williamson to give the Mocs a 4-3 lead with a single to center field. Furman's
Sierra Tufts retired the next two batters with the bases loaded to keep the deficit at one run, and the Paladins knotted the contest in the bottom of the frame when
Hannah Poole reached on a one-out double and scored on
Ainsley Yoshizumi's two-out double to left field.
Both teams stranded a runner on base in the eighth inning prior to the Mocs scoring the winning run in the top of the ninth.
Tufts (10-13) took the loss for Furman after allowing two runs on four hits over 4.2 innings of work. She walked four batters and struck out two.
Phillips and Lipari each registered two hits for Chattanooga, while Lykins and Poole both posted three-hit outings for the Paladins.
Furman (20-29, 8-9 SoCon) concludes the regular season on Wednesday when it faces the North Carolina Tar Heels at Anderson Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Paladins will then travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., May 10-13 for the double elimination SoCon Softball Championship at Frost Stadium.
