ATHENS, Ga. -- Senior Anna Morgan (E) tied for tenth Wednesday to lead the Furman women's golf team in the final day of the NCAA Athens Regional at the par-72, 6,347 yard University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
A native of Spartanburg, S.C., Morgan, the 2023 Southern Conference Player of the Year, tallied a 76 with a birdie on No. 7 in the tournament's final round. Freshman Chloe Johnson (+7) carded a 74 with birdies on No. 5 and No. 14 to tie for 27th, while freshman Faith Johnson (+12) paced the team with a 73 with three birdies on Wednesday, tying for 41st. Â
Freshman Liza Lapeyre (+17) recorded a 79 with three birdies, including back-to-back birdies on No. 7 and No. 8 to tie for 51st, and junior Caroline Crumrine (+26) finished 59th after scoring an 81 with a birdie on No. 12.
Host Georgia (-13), which ranks 30th nationally, won the regional by two strokes over No. 4 South Carolina (-11). No. 9 San Jose State (+14) finished third, followed by No. 16 Ole Miss (+17) in fourth. Augusta (+21) claimed the fifth spot to round out the advancing teams. Furman (+36) tied for tenth with No. 41 Kent State (+36).Â
Furman was part of a 12-team regional field that battled for a top-five finish and a berth in the 30-team NCAA Championship, which will be held May 19-24 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz Â
The Paladins, which secured the SoCon's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by capturing their 20th league championship last month at Moss Creek's South Course in Hilton Head, S.C., made their 24th NCAA Regional appearance. Furman appeared in 17-straight regionals from 1993, when the regional format began, until 2010. Â
