Greenville, S.C. – Furman netted a pair of first half goals and held off Georgia Southern in the second half to down the Eagles, 2-1, in non-conference women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Stone Stadium.
The Paladins (2-0-0) jumped into the lead less than five minutes in on
Valentina Mosquera's second goal of the season.
Hannah Farr dashed down the left side and played a pass ahead to Mosquera who fired a left-footed strike past Georgia Southern goalkeeper Quinn Wilson at the 4:43 mark.
The Eagles controlled much of the possession in the opening half and created the majority of the chances, but Furman managed to double its lead in the 44
th minute through substitute
Julie Galie. Following a Paladin corner kick,
Ava King settled the ball in the box and played a pass back out to
Allison Travis on the left. She sent a cross towards the top of the six-yard box and Galie rose to head her shot off the right post and past Wilson at the 43:02 mark for her first goal of the campaign.
"I'm really proud of our team for getting the victory today against a strong, well-coached Georgia Southern side," said Paladin head coach
Andrew Burr. "They picked up a 2-0 win at UAB on Thursday, so we knew they'd be a tough opponent. I thought we battled well in the heat and got contributions from a lot of players.
Addison Corn played with a lot of confidence in goal and provided strong leadership for us."
Georgia Southern managed to get on the board with just 36 seconds remaining when Sade Heinrichs lined a 19-yard strike off the underside of the cross bar. Furman, however, finished off the final seconds to preserve the win.
The Eagles posted a 20-9 advantage in total shots and an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. Corn, who picked up the victory in net, notched seven saves to secure her 20
th career victory. Wilson stopped three shots for GSU in a losing effort.
