Columbia, S.C. – No. 10 South Carolina broke a scoreless tie with a pair of goals in the opening 15 minutes of the second half en route to a 2-0 victory over Furman in women's soccer action Sunday evening at Eugene Stone Stadium in Columbia, S.C.
After
Addison Corn turned away six shots to keep Furman even through 45 minutes, the Gamecocks netted the go-ahead goal in the opening minutes of the second half. South Carolina won possession just outside the box and Catherine Barry turned to fire a left-footed strike into the left-hand corner from 17 yards out at 46:52.
Barry doubled the South Carolina advantage with her second goal of the night in the 59
th minute. She touched the ball around one defender at the top of the box and cut inside of another Paladin before poking a shot past Corn at the 58:21 mark.
Furman's
Ashlyn Goila forced a diving stop in the 51
st minute and
Valentina Mosquera laced a shot off the cross bar in the 62
nd minute to create the Paladins' best scoring chances of the match.
The Gamecocks (6-1-1) posted a 32-4 margin in total shots and managed a 14-1 edge in shots on goal. Taylor Fox and Christina Tsaousis combined on the shutout for South Carolina while Corn finished with 12 saves in a losing effort for Furman.
Furman (3-3-1) returns home to host South Carolina State on Thursday, September 14, at 7 p.m.
