Greenville, S.C. – Valentina Mosquera and
Jenny Jacobson netted second half goals to pace Furman to a 2-0 victory over South Carolina State in women's soccer action Thursday night on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium.
After a scoreless first half in which Furman posted a 10-1 margin in shots, the Paladins finally found the breakthrough goal in the 51
st minute. Mosquera collected the ball in the midfield and lashed a long-range shot into the upper right-hand corner at the 50:07 mark to give the Paladins the lead.
Jacobson, a freshman from Atlanta, Ga., doubled the lead at 70:15 when she punched a shot inside the right post from inside the six-yard box on an assist from
Ava King to record her first regular season collegiate goal.
"Unfortunately, we weren't able to score early like we wanted and take advantage of our chances in the first half, but we were able to get the shutout and get playing time for everyone," said Paladin head coach
Andrew Burr. "Our team is still dealing with some injuries and I know we are capable of playing better. We'll go back to work and start preparing for conference play next week."
Senior
Addison Corn recorded the shutout in net for the Paladins, her second of the season, as Furman improved to 4-3-1 on the campaign. South Carolina State's Sierra Curnell suffered the loss for the Bulldogs despite recording seven saves.
The Paladins finished with a 22-2 advantage in total shots and an 11-0 margin in shots on goal against the Bulldogs (0-6-0).
Furman is idle until Thursday, September 21, when the Paladins open Southern Conference play at Stone Stadium versus East Tennessee State.
