UNC Asheville Holds Off Furman, 2-1

Paladins Travel To Face Nationally-Ranked South Carolina Next Sunday

Asheville, N.C. – UNC Asheville built a 2-0 lead and held on to down Furman, 2-1, in non-conference women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Greenwood Field in Asheville, N.C.

The Bulldogs (4-1-0), who claimed their fourth consecutive victory, got on the board in the 30th minute when Kaiya Boyd and Taylor Gardner combined to play Barrett Eidson through the Furman back line. The UNCA attacker tucked a shot inside the left post at the 29:40 mark to open the scoring.

Less than four minutes into the second half, Asheville doubled its lead off a set piece. The Bulldogs earned a corner kick and Shae Hassig headed in Azalea Mihailovich's in-swinging corner at the 48:09 mark to up the UNCA advantage to 2-0. The second Asheville goal proved to be the Bulldogs' only shot of the second half as Furman dominated the chances for the remainder of the match.

The Paladins found their breakthrough in the 65th minute when Valentina Mosquera made a diagonal run into the middle of the box and received an Ashlyn Goila pass. She turned and fired a shot into the left-hand corner at 64:45 to trim the margin to 2-1.

Furman (3-2-1) outshot the Bulldogs 6-0 over the final 40 minutes, but UNCA's Grace Murray finished the match with six saves to secure the win for Asheville. Addison Corn, Furman's senior goalkeeper, stopped three shots in a losing effort.

The Paladins, who finished with a 12-10 advantage in total shots and 7-5 edge in shots on goal, missed several chances to break the deadlock early in the first half. Hannah Farr had a goal wiped off the board in the opening minutes when she was whistled for a foul. Mosquera pounced on a loose ball in the box and was denied a goal on a lunging block by a Bulldog defender. Shania Diaz's follow-up shot sailed over the bar. Allison Travis later pounded a shot off the cross bar in the first 45 minutes.

The Paladins cap their four-game road trip on Sunday, September 10, at South Carolina before returning home to host South Carolina State on September 14.
