Winston-Salem, N.C. – Roald Mitchell netted a hat trick and 16
th-ranked Wake Forest totaled four second half goals to down Furman, 5-1, on Monday evening in men's soccer action at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Demon Deacons opened the scoring in the 15
th minute when Furman was whistled for a foul in the box and Mitchell drilled his spot kick into the lower right-hander corner. Furman has its own case for a penalty kick minutes later when
Christian Kraus was taken down in the box, but the foul was not granted.
In the 37
th minute, Furman equalized on a set piece.
Callum Holland served a long free kick in to the box and
Alfredo Diaz-Santillan headed his shot past Wake Forest goalkeeper Trace Alphin at the 36:02 mark.
With the match knotted at 1-1 in the 54
th minute, Mitchell took a pass from Oliver Chase and slotted a shot into the left-hand corner to give the Demon Deacons a 2-1 lead. In the 70
th minute,
Luke Tandy was sent off after being whistled for denying a scoring opportunity in the box and Mitchell converted from the penalty spot for the second time on the night to double the Wake Forest lead.
The Demon Deacons' Jahlane Forbes deposited a shot into the right-hand corner in the 71
st minute to up the margin to 4-1 and Leo Guarino ripped a shot past Furman goalkeeper
Cameron Maung-Maung from outside the box in the 89
th minute against the 10-man Paladins to cap the scoring.
Wake Forest (2-0-2) posted a 17-3 advantage in total shots and a 7-3 edge in shots on target.
Furman (1-2-0) opens its home schedule on Friday, September 8, with a 6 p.m. kickoff versus Winthrop at Stone Soccer Stadium.
