GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman is ranked sixth in the first AFCA FCS Top 26 Poll of the regular season, it was announced today.
The Paladins (1-0) held on to their preseason No. 6 ranking following a season opening, 45-10 win over Tennessee Tech last Thursday.
Samford is seventh and Mercer 24th in this week's poll, giving the Southern Conference three teams in the Top 25.
Reigning national champion South Dakota State is No. 1, followed by North Dakota State and Montana State. William & Mary is ranked fourth, and Holy Cross rounds out the top five in the poll.
Also ranked sixth in the Stats Perform FCS Poll, which was released on Monday, Furman plays at South Carolina this Saturday in a 7:30 p.m. SEC+ Network/ESPN+ contest.
The Paladins racked up six turnovers (4 interceptions, 2 fumble recoveries), its most since 2009, in the win over Tennessee Tech. Included in the tally were "pick-six" returns covering 43 and 67 yards by cornerback
Travis Blackshear and linebacker
Dan Scianna, respectively.
Now 13-3 in its last 16 games, Furman fashioned a 10-3 campaign a year ago that featured seven consecutive wins en route to an at-large bid to the FCS playoffs, where the Paladins claimed a 31-6 first round home win over Coastal Athletic Association member Elon.
The Paladins were a consensus first place pick in a pair of Southern Conference preseason polls conducted by league coaches and media.
