Greenville, S.C. – Marcus Foster totaled 22 points and 11 rebounds and Furman limited the nation's second-best scoring offense to just 68 points to snap Samford's NCAA Division I-leading 17-game winning streak, 78-68, Wednesday night at Timmons Arena.
The victory improved the Paladins, winners of five straight, to 11-9 overall and 5-2 in the Southern Conference. Samford dipped to 17-3 overall and 6-1 in league play. The win marked the 150
th victory for Paladin head coach
Bob Richey in less than seven full seasons in charge of the Furman program. His 150-64 record and .701 winning percentage as head coach place him among the top 20 active NCAA Division I coaches in the country in winning percentage.
Furman outscored the Bulldogs by 18 points behind the three-point line in the first half to build a 34-25 lead at intermission. Samford trimmed the margin to four points at 44-40 with under 14 minutes left, but the Paladins answered with a 12-3 run, capped by five straight points from
Alex Williams, to extend the lead to 56-43 with 10:30 to go.
After the Bulldogs pulled within seven on Nathan Johnson's triple with 8:57 left, Furman's defense held Samford to just one basket over the next 4:16 as the Paladins increased the advantage to 67-53 with an 11-4 spurt. The Paladins pushed their lead to 76-60 before cruising to the 10-point win, their ninth win in the last 10 games versus Samford.
Foster went 7-for-17 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line en route to his second double-double in the last three games since returning from injury. Williams made good on 4-of-6 triples to score 16 points.
JP Pegues and PJay Smith finished with 12 and 11, respectively.
The Paladins shot 45.9% from the field, including a 12-of-28 effort from three-point range, and converted on 10-of-13 trips to the charity stripe. Furman managed a 41-35 edge on the glass and notched 12 offensive rebounds which led to 19 second-chance points.
Achor Achor led the Bulldogs with 19 points and six boards while A.J. Staton-McCray added 14 points. Samford shot 43.8% from the field but connected on just 9-of-27 three-point tries and 3-of-10 trips to the foul line. The Bulldogs forced 18 Furman turnovers, however, the Paladins forced Samford into 17 miscues.
The victory marked the 29
th for Furman in its last 32 SoCon games inside Timmons Arena.
Furman travels to Spartanburg, S.C., to take on Wofford on Saturday evening. Tip-off at Richardson Indoor Stadium is set for 6 p.m. and the game will air live on Nexstar affiliates throughout the region and on ESPN+.
