Greenville, S.C. – Furman held Wofford to just one shot on target and
Wilfer Bustamante and
Christian Kraus netted goals as the Paladins blanked the Terriers, 2-0, in Southern Conference men's soccer play Tuesday evening on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, Furman jumped on top in the 53
rd minute when
Diego Hernandez played a pass ahead to Bustamante inside the right side of the box and the freshman cut inside of his defender before placing a shot into the left-hand corner. The goal at the 52:46 mark was the third of the season for Bustamante.
The Paladins added an insurance goal in the 86
th minute. Wofford was whistled for a handball on the left side of the box and Kraus converted from the penalty spot for his team-best fifth goal of the campaign.
The Furman defense limited Wofford to just three total shots and one shot on target over 90 minutes and sophomore
Aaron Salinas notched one save to record the shutout. All told, the Paladins managed a 15-3 advantage in total shots and 6-1 edge in shots on goal. Leo Ledin made four saves in a losing effort for the Terriers.
"It's great to get the three points and great to get a shutout," said Paladin head coach
Doug Allison. "Wilfer took his chance well and our defense was solid."
With the victory, Furman improved to 7-3-2 overall and 2-1 in league play while Wofford slid to 5-5-2 overall and 1-2 in the SoCon.
Furman is back in action on Saturday, October 26, when it travels to Johnson City, Tenn., to face ETSU. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. and the match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
