ELON, N.C. – Paladin freshman
Nicolas Dispas captured a flight championship to lead the Furman men's tennis team this weekend at the Elon Invitational from the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Dispas, a native of Biot, France, went 4-0 playing at Flight C and began the tournament on Friday with a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(4) victory over Antoni Pankowski of North Carolina Central. He then posted back-to-back wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals on Saturday. In the quarterfinals, Dispas topped South Carolina State's Vanja Petrov in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-1, before defeating Vladislav Gorbatenko of Norfolk State, 7-5, 6-2. Dispas secured the flight championship on Sunday with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Charlotte's Danny Yassine.
The flight championship by Dispas capped a weekend that saw the Paladins combine for eight singles victories.
Connor Laymon, also competing in Flight C, advanced to the semifinals after winning twice over the first two days. Laymon started play with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory against Deniz Okyay of Norfolk State and then won again in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, versus Campbell's Alexander Fragasso.
Playing at Flight E,
Sam Fancutt went 2-1 with a pair of straight set victories. Fancutt topped North Carolina A&T's Mathieu Dussaubat, 6-3, 6-2, on Friday and defeated McKane Johnson of Georgia State on Saturday, 7-6(2), 6-2.
In doubles action, Furman registered four victories highlighted by three on Friday. Burnam and Laymon, playing in Flight B, won 6-0 over Wake Forest's Joaquin Guilleme and Nikola Parichkov while Fancutt and
Nico Snyder were victorious in their Flight C matchup with Okyay and Jakub Solarski of Norfolk State, 6-3. Allen and Dispas topped Zachary Portnoy and Mark Taranov of Richmond at Flight D, 7-6(1).
Fancutt and Snyder closed out the tournament on Sunday with a 6-4 victory against East Tennessee State's Juan Andres Listo and James Sim.
The Paladins continue their fall slate next weekend, November 1-3, traveling to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the Wake Forest Invite.
