CHARLESTON, S.C. –
Trey Hedden's six-yard touchdown pass to
Jackson Pryor with just over a minute remaining capped a fourth quarter comeback that gave Furman a 17-16 win over The Citadel in the 104th clash of the oldest Southern Conference rivalry Saturday afternoon at Johnson Hagood Stadium.
The victory, the fourth straight for Furman (2-3, 1-0 SoCon) against The Citadel (2-4, 0-3 SoCon), followed the postponement of the Paladins' scheduled league season opener against Samford last Saturday due to Hurricane Hellene.
Hedden's game winning pass to Pryor, a true freshman, completed an 11-play 88-yard drive that saw the true freshman quarterback connect on 5-of-7 attempts for 67 yards while also rushing twice for 16 yards.
Ben Ferguson caught two passes for 35 yards while
Colton Hinton hauled in two aerials for 26 yards on the go-ahead drive.
Hedden finished the game connecting on 23-of-33 passes for 246 yards and two touchdowns.
Furman, which managed just two first downs and 34 total yards on 17 offensive plays in the first half, trailed 10-0 at intermission.
Down 13-0, the Paladins broke thru with 52 seconds remaining in the third quarter with an
Ian Williams 26-yard field goal.
The fourth quarter proved to be all Furman as the Paladins rolled up 187 yards and 10 first downs while holding The Citadel to nine total yards and no first downs.
A fumbled punt by the Paladins set up a 44-yard field goal by Ben Barnes with 8:27 remaining that gave The Citadel a 16-3 lead.
Furman answered with its first of two fourth quarter touchdown drives, covering 78 yards in nine plays. A 26-yard pass from Hedden to true freshman wide receiver
Devin Hester, Jr., gave Furman a first down at the Bulldog 24. Six plays later Hedden drilled a 10-yard pass into the hands of Ferguson just inside the pylon to pull the Paladins to within 16-10 following the PAT.
After Hedden's go-ahead pass to Pryor, Bulldog quarterback Jonathan Bennett, under pressure from Furman's pass rush, underthrew his intended receiver near his team's sideline on second down, and it was picked off by Paladin redshirt freshman cornerback
Jaylen Moson with 30 seconds to go.
