Nick Anderson combined for 48 points as Furman led wire-to-wire on its way to a 75-67 victory over American Athletic Conference member Tulane on Friday night at Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
With the victory, Furman forged its first 4-0 start since the 2020-21 season. The Green Wave dropped to 3-1 on the campaign after being limited to a season-low 67 points.
The duo of Smith and Anderson combined to connected on 11-of-21 three-point tries and 11-of-12 trips to the foul line while forward
Davis Molnar pulled down a career-best 10 rebounds for Furman. Smith, who surpassed 1,000 career points with his first basket of the night, finished with 29 points and Anderson scored 19.
Furman hit four triples in the opening 6:30 to race to a 17-7 before carrying a 32-28 advantage into halftime. Tulane cut the margin to just two points early in the second half, but Smith scored eight points as part of another 17-7 Paladin run that extended the cushion to 49-37 with 12:29 to play. The Green Wave was able to pull within five points on five occasions over the final 12 minutes, however, Furman played turnover-free basketball in the second half and connected on 15-of-18 trips to the foul line over the final 20 minutes to hold Tulane at arm's length.
The Paladins shot just 37.9% but made good on 13-of-36 three-point attempts and 18-of 22 trips to the charity stripe. Furman managed 13 points off 12 Green Wave turnovers while committing only seven miscues.
Guard Asher Wood scored a team-high 17 for Tulane and Gregg Glenn III and Mari Jordan added 14 apiece. Glenn pulled down 10 rebounds to notch a double-double.
Tulane shot 42.6% despite being held to 6-for-18 shooting from three-point range.
Furman concludes its three-game homestand on Wednesday, November 20, when it hosts Oglethorpe at Legacy Early College's Parker Gymnasium.
