GREENVILLE, S.C. – Ava Augustson led all players with 15 kills, while
Ashley Stein poured in 11, to lead the Furman volleyball team to its fourth consecutive win Friday evening with a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-20, 25-18) of the Samford Bulldogs in Southern Conference action at Alley Gymnasium.
The Paladins, whose four-match winning streak is the longest of the season, improve to 12-11 overall and 6-6 in the SoCon. Samford falls to 13-10 on the year and 7-6 in league play.
Augustson hit .406 overall while adding eight digs and helped pace a Furman offense that saw it post a .300 hitting percentage or better for the fifth time this season, finishing with a .318 clip. Stein contributed eight digs after hitting .296 for the match.
Tennyson Gorman compiled eight kills on .667 hitting.
Emily Navarro had 19 assists and eight digs, and
Quinn Morrissey dished out 12 assists.
Kennedy Seekford had a match high 18 digs.
Gracie Lynn Butler led the Bulldogs offensively with 11 kills while Lexi Thatcher tallied a double-double of 28 assists and 10 digs. Kate Morgan led the team with 12 digs.
The Paladins compiled a .375 hitting percentage in the opening set to claim the 25-19 victory. Augustson registered six of her kills in the first set on .500 hitting with Navarro and Morrissey combining for 10 assists. Navarro and Seekford both had three digs. In a set that featured nine ties and five lead changes, Samford held a 13-12 lead before Furman answered with an 11-3 run to hold a 23-16 advantage following Morrissey's service ace. A Bulldog service error gave the Paladins the six-point victory.
Furman increased its lead to 2-0 over Samford after securing a 25-20 triumph in the second set. Augustson, Stein, and
Izzy Castelloe all posted four kills to pace the Paladin offense with Navarro contributing six assists. Seekford's 12 digs helped Furman limit Samford to just .114 hitting. The Paladins broke the set open when, leading 6-5, they outscored the Bulldogs 13-5 to take their largest lead of the frame at 19-10 after Castelloe connected on a kill. Samford rallied back to within four points before Stein clinched the set for Furman with her kill.
The Paladins registered another impressive offensive showing in the third set, hitting .381 as a team to clinch the match with a 25-18 triumph. Augustson and
Chandler Parker both compiled five kills while Stein added four. Navarro dished out seven assists, and Augustson and Stein both recorded four digs. Furman trailed 8-3 in the early stages until a 14-4 run propelled it to a 17-12 lead following Parker's kill. The Bulldogs got to within four points late, but Furman ended the set scoring five of the last seven points.
The Paladins ended the match holding a 46-34 advantage in kills, 39-32 in assists, and 54-47 in digs.
