GREENVILLE, S.C. --
Jada Session's three-point play in the final minute gave Furman the lead and highlighted a late flourish to help the Paladins edge Western Carolina, 58-53, in Southern Conference women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at Timmons Arena.
The victory halted a three-game losing skid by Furman (13-12, 3-6 SoCon), completed the Paladins' season sweep of Western Carolina (6-18, 1-8 SoCon), and extended Furman's series winning streak against the Catamounts to 14 games.
Session's fast break layup, set up by a
Tate Walters pass following a steal by
Sydney James, tied the game at 53-53 with 51 seconds remaining. Â Her ensuing free throw gave Furman its first lead of the game.
Niveya Henley and
Tate Walters both converted one of two free throw attempts to stretch the advantage to 56-53, and James completed Furman's game ending 9-0 run with a pair free throws with 13 seconds on the clock.
The lead change in the final minute was the only one of the contest, which featured just two ties, the last coming at 45-45 after
Sydney Ryan drained a 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the third quarter.
Western Carolina scored the first six points of the fourth period on baskets by Lonasia Brewer and Tyja Beans, which sandwiched a pair of Chelsea Wooten free throws, to take a 51-45 lead with 6:26 remaining. Â The Catamounts, however, went scoreless over the next five minutes, allowing the Paladins to chip away and grab their first lead of the game on Session's three-point play.
Ryan led Furman with 15 points, followed by Session with 14 and Henley with 12.
Brewer led all scorers with 20 points.
James paced Furman with nine rebounds, helping the Paladins to a virtual draw on the glass with injured junior forward
Kate Johnson on the bench for a second consecutive game.
Walters, seeing her first action after missing the last four contests with injury, was plagued by foul trouble and registered only seven minutes of action before delivering the assist to Session for the go-ahead basket.
It was a shooting struggle for both teams, with Furman connecting on 16-of-48 attempts (33.3%) and Western Carolina 21-of-57 (36.6%). Â The Paladins outscored the Catamounts by 15 points af the free throw line, downing 23-of-30 chances to just 8-of-13 for WCU. Â Furman also forged a 16-7 edge on points off turnovers.
The Paladins wrap up their three-game homestand on Thursday against Wofford in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
