HUNTINGTON, W.Va.. -- Marshall handed Furman a 5-2 loss Sunday at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center in Huntington, W.Va.

Paladin freshmen won tiebreakers to pick up singles wins at flights two and five.  Maeve Thornton outlasted Emma Vanderheyden, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(10-7) at flight two, and Macy Hitchcock came from behind for a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0(10-7) victory over Aisling McGrane at number five. 

The Thundering Herd (8-2) claimed two out of the three doubles contests to score the first point.  Sophia Hurrion and McGrane defeated juniors Sara Snyder and Grace Thomas, 6-2, at flight two, then Gabrielle Clairotte and Rieke Gillar held on for a 7-5 victory versus junior Ellie Schulson and Hitchcock.  At flight one, Paladin junior Jess Dawson and Thornton led, 6-5, over Johanna Strom and Vanderheyden when the point was clinched. 

Marshall won the remaining singles matches.  Strom topped Snyder, 6-3, 6-4, in the top-seeded match up, and Doroteja Joksovic entered the lineup at number three, where she beat Schulson, 6-2, 6-2.  At flight four, Hurrion held off Thomas, 6-0, 6-3, and Gillar outlasted junior Marissa Pennings, who entered the Furman  lineup at flight six, 6-0, 7-6(0).

Furman (1-4) returns home to face Harvard Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center.
