Greenville, S.C. – Sophomore
Sylvia Burroughs belted a grand slam and drove in all five runs to lead Furman to a 5-1 victory over Towson before the Paladins dropped an 8-4 decision to Georgetown in the nightcap of day two at the Furman Softball Invitational at Pepsi Stadium on Saturday.
Furman 5, Towson 1
Freshman
Taylor Miller earned her first career win in the circle and Burroughs drove in all five runs to lead the Paladins past Towson, 5-1.
Singles by
Caitlin Goldwait,
Ainsley Yoshizumi, and
Ashlee Lykins set the table for the Paladins in the bottom half of the third inning. Burroughs broke the scoreless tie by driving a grand slam off the scoreboard in left-center on a 2-1 pitch to stake Furman to a 4-0 lead. Two innings later, Lykins reached on a two-out, infield single and stole second base before Burroughs doubled to the warning track in center field for her fifth RBI of the night.
Miller (1-0), making just her second career start, limited the Tigers to one run on four hits over five innings. The Centennial, Colo., native recorded three strikeouts and did not walk a batter in her home debut.
Lauralee Scott came out of the Paladin bullpen and tossed two scoreless innings to finish off the victory.
Burroughs and Lykins both went 2-for-3 at the plate to fuel Furman's nine-hit attack. Scott backed up her strong pitching by adding a double at the plate.
Maddie Gardner (0-4), who allowed five runs on eight hits over five innings, took the loss for Towson.
Georgetown 8, Furman 4
Georgetown feasted on 10 walks and three Paladin errors to hold off Furman, 8-4, in the final of five games on Saturday.
The Hoyas (5-4) took advantage of four walks and an error in the top of the first to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Samantha Miller notched the key hit of the rally, a two-run single. Georgetown got a single and walk among the first three batters in the second inning to chase starter
Emme Buzhardt. Maicie Levitt executed a squeeze bunt off Paladin reliever
Lauralee Scott to drive in Claire Turner and give the Hoyas a 4-0 margin.
Trailing 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Furman started a rally with a Lykins single and Hoya error.
Hannah Poole drove in the Paladins' first run with a groundout and
Lauren Woodall dropped a two-out single into right field to trim the deficit to 4-3.
After Georgetown took advantage of back-to-back walks to start the top of the fifth and added another run to its lead, the Paladins put two on base with nobody out in the bottom of the frame.
Sylvia Burroughs lined into a double play, but
Kiley Perry followed with a triple to the base of the wall in right field to drive in Lykins and cut the Hoya lead to 6-4.
Georgetown put the game away in the seventh with the help of three hits and two Paladin errors that led to a pair of runs for the final 8-4 margin.
Julia Parker (1-2) allowed four runs, just one earned, over 4.2 innings to pick up the win for the Hoyas. She scattered six hits and allowed two walks without recording a strikeout. Kayla Dunn recorded a save by retiring all seven batters she faced in 2.1 innings of relief.
Brooke Rebhan, Turner, and Gabby Park each collected two hits apiece for Georgetown while Miller drove in two runs. Lykins registered two hits and a base on balls for the Paladins.
Buzhardt (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing four runs on two hits and five walks in 1.1 innings. Georgetown scored five of its eight runs directly off walks issued by Paladin pitching.
The Furman Invitational concludes with three games on Sunday at Pepsi Stadium. The Paladins (6-2) host Lipscomb in the finale at 2 p.m. Live statistics will be available for all three games on Sunday via StatBroadcast.com.
