Conway, S.C. – Furman exploded for 13 runs on 15 hits, including three roundtrippers, to down ACC foe Louisville, 13-8, in the opening game of Coastal Carolina's Battle at the Beach Saturday morning at St. John Stadium in Conway, S.C. The Bowling Green Falcons clipped the Paladins, 7-3, in the second game of the day.
Furman 13, Louisville 8
First baseman
Kiley Perry went 4-for-5 with a pair of homers and a school-record seven RBIs to power Furman past Louisville, 13-8, in the Paladins' first game of the day.
Furman opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning.
Ainsley Yoshizumi drew a leadoff walk and
Sylvia Burroughs reached on a one-out single before Perry launched a three-run, opposite-field homer. Perry upped the lead to 5-0 with a two-out, two-run double in the second inning after Yoshizumi and
Ashlee Lykins drew walks.
The Paladins loaded the bases in the third inning on two singles and a base on balls to force Louisville to go back to its bullpen. Yoshizumi greeted reliever Sam Booe rudely by hammering a grand slam to extend the Furman advantage to 9-0.
Louisville (10-2) got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the third and two more in the fourth inning prior to another Furman offensive outburst. Lykins began the top of the sixth with an infield single and scored on Burroughs' double. Perry and
Hannah Poole followed with back-to-back blasts to increase the Paladin lead to 13-4.
The Cardinals answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by RBI double from Bailee Richardson and Vanessa Miller, and added one run in the seventh, but Furman's
Lauralee Scott came on to close out the game.
Relief pitcher
Emme Buzhardt (1-2) picked up the win despite allowing five runs on six hits over 3.1 innings or work. She replaced starter
Sierra Tufts, who allowed three runs on three hits over three innings.
Gabby Holloway (1-1), Louisville's starter, was tagged with four runs in 1.1 innings to take the loss.
In addition to Perry's three extra-base hits and seven RBIs, Lykins, Burroughs, and
Ansley Chiang each collected two hits for the Paladins. Furman posted a season-best 15 hits in total.
Holloway notched three hits for the Cardinals while Miller added two hits and three RBIs.
Bowling Green 7, Furman 3
Bowling Green scored seven runs over the first four innings and got a complete-game effort from pitcher Taylor Turner to defeat Furman, 7-3, Saturday afternoon at St. John Stadium.
The Falcons plated a pair of first inning runs against starter
Lauralee Scott before the Paladins put up three in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-2 lead. Scott worked a walk and Chiang singled to right field ahead of
Grayson Snead's RBI double down the left field line. After retiring the next two batters, Turner hit consecutive batters and issued her second base on balls in the frame to force home the go-ahead run.
Bowling Green (1-0) loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the third before tying the game on Lexi Carver's RBI single and taking the lead when Peyton Dolejs drove in a run with an infield grounder. The Falcons tacked on three more runs in the fourth. Once again, a walk and a single set the table and Reagan Williamson followed with a two-run double. Makailah Dees capped the scoring with an RBI single.
Turner, who improved to 1-1 in the circle, sat down 16 of the final 17 batters she faced to earn the victory. She allowed three runs on four hits over seven innings while walking three Paladins and striking out four. Williamson and Dolejs combined for five RBIs while Carver and Hannah Hunt each register two hits.
Reliever
Taylor Miller (1-1) surrendered four runs on four hits over two innings to absorb her first collegiate defeat. The freshman walked two batters without recording a strikeout. Burroughs and Perry both collected a single and base on balls for the Paladins.
Furman (8-4) is back in action versus the Falcons on Sunday at noon. Tournament play concludes for the Paladins when they face Coastal Carolina at 2:30 p.m.
