Charlotte, N.C. – Anna Roser and
Sophie Shaw combined for seven goals on Saturday afternoon as the Furman women's lacrosse team rallied back in the second half to defeat the Queens (N.C.) Royals, 13-11, at Dickson Field.
With the win, Furman snaps a five-game losing streak and improves to 2-6 on the season. Queens (N.C.) drops to 5-4 overall.
The Paladins outscored the Royals 3-1 over the game's final five minutes with Shaw netting two of the goals during a 2:26 stretch. Elise Grissett tied the score at 10-10 with 9:10 left in the contest before Shaw's second goal put Furman back in front, 11-10, at the 4:54 mark. After Jordan Tandler evened the score for Queens (N.C.) at 11-11 with four minutes remaining, the Paladins held the hosts without a goal the rest of the game. Shaw's game-winner with 2:28 to go put Furman ahead, 12-11, and
Paige Harman sealed the victory on her goal with 1:33 remaining.
The Paladins were held without a goal during the second quarter as the Royals used a 5-0 run to go in front, 7-4, less than two minutes into the third quarter. Roser and
Mia Falco responded with three straight goals for Furman to tie the score at the 6:44 mark. Both teams scored twice over the last 5:44 of the third quarter to head to the fourth tied at 9-9.
Hannah Dintino scored twice in the opening quarter with
Molly Faul and
Sophia Buzelis each adding a goal to give the Paladins a 4-2 lead.
Roser scored a game high four goals while Shaw led Furman offensively with five points on three goals and two assists. Dintino contributed two goals while Buzelis, Harman, Faul, and Falco all scored once. Seven different players had one caused turnover. In goal,
Lily Rathbun posted seven saves and set a school record for ground balls in a game for the second time this season, finishing with nine. The nine ground balls surpass her old school record of eight, which occurred against 2
nd-ranked James Madison on March 2.
Tandler had a team high four goals for Queens (N.C.) while three other players scored twice. Maura O'Donoghue dished out a game high three assists. In goal, Caroline Keaemer totaled four saves and four ground balls.
The Paladins held a 16-10 advantage in draws while finishing the contest with 17 ground balls. Furman's defense forced the Royals into 13 turnovers including seven in the second half.
The Paladins close out non-conference play on Tuesday, March 19 traveling to Gainesville, Fla., for a 12 p.m. opening draw at 13
