Furman To Take On Samford Sunday In SoCon Opener

Marissa Pennings

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team will take on Samford Sunday in the Paladins' Southern Conference opener.  First serve is set for 11 a.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.

The Paladins enter Sunday's match at 4-10 after sweeping Quinnipiac, 7-0, on Monday.  Furman  won the top two doubles matches to take the first point then scored straight-set victories in all six singles matches.

Furman is looking to defend its 2023 SoCon regular season title after posting a perfect 7-0 regular season record last year under first-year head coach Michelle Dasso.  The title, which was the Paladins' seventh straight, marked Furman's 26th overall.  Ellie Schulson was named to the All-SoCon first team for singles, while Jess Dawson and Sara Snyder, who ranked as high as 51st nationally, were voted to the All-SoCon first team for doubles.

Samford is 3-8 overall this season and is also opening the league season on Sunday.  The Bulldogs dropped a 5-2 decision to Campbell in Charleston last week but scored early-season victories over Alabama State, North Alabama, and Southern Mississippi.

Sunday's match marks the 22nd meeting between the two programs.  Furman won last year's meeting, 5-2, in Birmingham, to take a 17-4 lead in the series.
