GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Furman extending its winning streak to five matches with a 6-1 victory over UNC Greensboro Thursday at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center in Greensboro, N.C.
The Paladins (8-10, 4-0 SoCon) swept the doubles matches to open the contest. Freshman Macy Hitchcock and junior Ellie Schulson beat Arina Babkova and Raegan Mitchell, 6-3, at number one, and juniors Jess Dawson and Sara Snyder held off Sydney Bly and Alexandra Dodashev, 6-4, at flight two. At flight three, freshman Maeve Thornton and junior Grace Thomas outlasted Juliana Craft and Lauren Thomson, 7-6(6).
In singles action, Furman won five of six matches, three in straight sets. Thornton came from behind for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over Babkova at flight one, and Schulson hung on to defeat Dodashev, 6-1, 5-7, 1-0(12-10) at flight two. At flight three, Thomas downed Mitchell, 6-2, 6-3, and Hitchcock blew past Craft, 6-2, 6-0, at number four. Dawson recorded a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 advantage over Bly at flight six.
The Spartans (3-15, 1-3 SoCon) picked up the point at flight five, where Thomson beat junior Marissa Pennings, 6-1, 7-6(4).
Furman returns to the Mickel Tennis Center for the team's home finale on Saturday. First serve versus Chattanooga is set for 11 a.m.
