Greenville, S.C. – Freshmen
Trip Campbell and
Wesley Siegel found the back of the net to propel Furman to a 2-0 victory over Lees-McRae in exhibition men's soccer action Saturday night at Stone Stadium.
Furman grabbed the lead in the 36
th minute when a pair of freshmen linked up to open the scoring.
Wilfer Bustamante curled a low cross behind the defense from the right wing to
Trip Campbell who tapped in the pass near the top of the six-yard box.
After a lightning delay of almost an hour, the Paladins and Bobcats picked up the match with the start of the second half. Furman dominated much of the possession and scoring opportunities over the final 45 minutes, highlighted by Siegel's strike in the 86
th minute. The Winter Garden, Fla., native collected the ball on the right side of the box following a
Luke Hutzell corner kick and lined a shot to the far-side netting.
Sophomore
Aaron Salinas went the distance in goal and stopped one shot to earn the shutout for the Paladins. Furman managed a 16-4 edge in shot attempts and 6-1 advantage in corner kicks earned.
The Paladins kick off the regular season on Thursday when they host UNC Wilmington at 8 p.m. on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium.
