Goalkeepers Shine As Furman, Davidson Play To Scoreless Draw

Paladins Travel To Face College Of Charleston On September 17

Davidson, N.C. – Furman's Aaron Salinas and Davidson's Lucas Beltran combined to record 10 saves as the Paladins and Wildcats played to a 0-0 draw in non-conference men's soccer Wednesday evening at Alumni Stadium in Davidson, N.C.

Both teams saw first-half scoring opportunities denied by outstanding saves from goalkeepers Salinas and Beltran. Salinas turned away Davidson's Ben Minikel-Lacocque just 3:20 into the match with a point-blank save diving to his right. In the 25th minute, Furman's Caleb Johnson attacked from the left side of the box and fired a shot that was pushed to the center of the box by Beltran. Diego Hernandez pounced on the rebound, but Beltran redirected his goal-bound effort with his feet to keep the match scoreless. Not to be outdone, Salinas answered by tipping Blake Peterson's shot over the crossbar off a Wildcat set piece less than three minutes later.

Davidson (0-1-4) opened the second half with a scoring opportunity, but Salinas stopped Denis Krioutchenkov's shot just 3:10 into the half to keep the match scoreless. Furman's Hernandez once again got on the end of a cross at the top of the box in the 57th minute only to see Beltran's quick reactions keep the attempt out of the back of the net.

Krioutchenkov produced a pair of dangerous free kick for the Wildcats in the final five minutes with his 86th minute shot rattling the crossbar. The Paladins created the final chance of the match with under a minute to play but Slade Starnes was unable to redirect a cross towards goal at the back post.

Beltran finished with seven saves and Salinas notched three as both goalkeepers registered a shutout. Davidson posted a 16-14 edge in total shots while Furman compiled a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Furman (2-2-2) returns to action on Tuesday, September 17, when it visits College of Charleston at Patriots Point Athletics Complex in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
