Set Pieces Key Second Half Rally As Furman Tops UNCA, 2-1

Jacobson, Gutierrez Net Second Half Goals For The Paladins

Greenville, S.C. – Furman rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit behind goals from Jenny Jacobson and Helen Gutierrez to edge UNC Asheville, 2-1, in non-conference women's soccer Thursday evening on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium.

Trailing 1-0 in the 48th minute, Ellie Herrmann served a corner kick to the center of the six-yard box and Jacobson, a sophomore from Atlanta, Ga., rose above the defense to head in her third goal of the season at 47:58. Less than four minutes later, Herrmann sent a corner kick towards the far post that Katie Bengough headed off the bar. Gutierrez pounced on the rebound and fired a shot into the right side of the net for her first goal of the campaign to give the Paladins a 2-1 lead at the 51:50 mark.

The pair of second half goals erased UNC Asheville's lead that came on Ava Bjorkman-Tracy's 38th minute strike off an assist from Nao Kawasaki.

Freshman Reese DeJong stopped three shots to record her second straight victory in goal while Alison Little notched eight saves in a losing effort for the Bulldogs (1-4-1).

"It's great to get our second straight win and I'm very pleased with how our team responded in the second half," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr. "We continue to get playing time for a lot of people and continue to develop our depth, which will help us come Southern Conference play."

Shots were even at 3-3 in the first half with the Paladins having attempted just one shot on goal, but Furman dominated the chances after the break. The Paladins finished with a 15-8 edge in total shots and 10-4 margin in shots on target, including 9-2 over the final 45 minutes.

Furman (3-4-0) is back in action Sunday when it plays host to USC Upstate for a 2 p.m. kickoff at Stone Stadium. The Furman men's team will host Virginia Tech following the conclusion of the women's match and admission is free to both games.
