INDEPENDENCE, MINN. -- Furman's Harris Barth (-4) holds a one-stroke lead at the Gopher Invitational after Sunday's opening rounds at the par the par 71, 7,586 yard Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn., while freshman Max Halflants (-2) finished as runner-up at the Minnesota Golf Classic at the par 72, 6,953 yard Pioneer Creek Golf Course in Maple Plain, Minn.
A native of Atlanta, Ga., Barth shot a 70 with four birdies in Sunday's opening round then fired a 68 with three birdies to complete a perfect second round on Sunday evening. Barth leads a trio of Big 10 players -- Noah Kent (-3) of Iowa, Rudy Sautron (-3) of Nebraska, and Cormac Sharpe (-3) of Minnesota -- by one stroke with 18 holes left to play.
Senior Will Morlan (E) is tied for 11th after carding a 76 with two birdies in the day's first round then firing a 66 with a team-high seven birdies in round two, including four-straight birdies from No. 10 through No. 13. Freshman Ludvig Josefsson (+7) made his collegiate debut on Sunday, posting a 74 with birdies on No. 7 and No. 8 in round one then adding a 75 with four birdies in the afternoon round. He is tied for 40th entering Monday's final round.
Junior Clark Akers (+12) shot an 80 with birdies on No. 12 and No. 17 in round one then rebounded with a 74 with three birdies in round two, tying for 64th, while junior Zach Frazer (+17) recorded a hole in one on No. 4 in round one and is tied for 76th after tallying rounds of 79 and 80 in Sunday's action.
Iowa (+3) leads the tournament by one stroke over Minnesota (+4) after 36 holes of play. Kent State (+7) sits in third, followed by Nebraska (+8) in fourth, and Marquette (+10) in fifth place. Rutgers (+11) is sixth, and Iowa State (+7) seventh, followed by the Paladins (+14) in eighth place in the loaded field.
At the Minnesota Golf Classic, rookie Halflants and sophomore Fisher Kennedy (+20) competed as individuals. Halflants finished at 2-under par after posting rounds of 70-71-73=214. He recorded six birdies in round one, five in round two, and three in round three. Kennedy tied for 69th, highlighted by a 75 with two birdies in round two.
