GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Tasia Johnson scored 13 points and UNC Greensboro rode hot 3-point shooting to down Furman, 64-54, in Southern Conference women's basketball on Saturday afternoon at Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
The Spartans (12-6, 3-1 SoCon), who entered the contest shooting just 29.4 percent from 3-point range, connected on 10-of-21 attempts (47.6 percent) from beyond the arc in cruising to their sixth consecutive win over the Paladins (11-8, 1-2 SoCon).
Johnson buried all three of her 3-point attempts, including a long range dart in the final seconds of the first quarter, to trim Furman's lead to 15-11 after one period. Â The trey sparked a 9-0 run that put UNCG ahead, 18-15, following a Jayde Gamble 3-ball four minutes into the second quarter.
Gamble followed Johnson in the scoring column with 12 points, and Nya Smith contributed 10 for UNCG, which outscored Furman 30-6 from 3-point range
The Spartans opened the second half with a 7-0 run over the first minute to play to go up, 35-27, following Johnson jump shot. Â
UNCG led by as many as 13 points in the second half and withstood a fourth quarter run by the Paladins, who got within five points at 54-49 following a fast break layup by
Jada Session with 3:43 remaining before the Spartans reeled off eight consecutive points over the next three minutes to put the game away.
Session was joined by teammate
Tate Walters for game high scoring honors with 17 points apiece, but they were the only Paladins to reach double figures.
UNCG registered a 41-30 rebounding advantage in the contest.
The Paladins shot just 35.7 percent for the game, connecting on 20-of-56 attempts, iincluding only 2-of-11 3-pointers.
Furman returns to action on Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. road contest at Samford.
