SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chloe Smith led Wofford with a match high 16 kills Saturday evening as the Terriers topped the Furman volleyball team 3-0 (18-25, 18-25, 14-25) in Southern Conference action from Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
Furman drops to 13-5 overall and 4-2 in the SoCon. With the win, Wofford improves to 9-8 on the year and 5-1 in conference play.
The Paladins had four players register six or more kills in the contest led by
Ashley Stein's team high nine and 11 digs.
Izzy Castelloe contributed eight kills,
Tennyson Gorman seven on .357 hitting, and
Lindsay Walch six.
Emily Navarro dished out 18 assists.
Smith paced the Terriers with her 16 kills while Bradley Brown turned in 10. Taylor Pecht (21) and Maddy Frazier (19) combined for 40 assists. Laney Klika posted 15 digs and Caroline Przystup 10.
Furman was limited to just .079 hitting in the first set with Wofford earning the 25-18 win. Walch led the Paladins with four kills on .375 hitting, Navarro added seven assists, and
Kennedy Seekford provided four digs. Walch put Furman ahead 6-4 in the early stages with her kill before the Terriers used a 15-6 run to take a 19-12 lead. A Paladin attack error gave Wofford its largest lead of the set at 22-14. Furman got to within six, 24-18, when the Terriers clinched the set the following point.
Wofford added another 25-18 victory in set two, which featured 10 ties and five lead changes, behind a .282 hitting performance. The Paladins registered a .111 clip as Castelloe led the team with five kills on .400 hitting. Navarro totaled eight assists and Stein eight digs. Furman took an early 7-5 lead in the frame with her service ace and later held a 10-9 advantage after Gorman connected on a kill. The Paladins trailed by one late on Castelloe's kill until the Terriers closed out on a 7-1 run.
Furman hit .167 in the third set while Wofford turned in a .462 mark en route to the 25-14 triumph. Stein posted a team high four kills and
Hayley Dionis added six digs and three assists. Navarro and
Quinn Morrissey also had three assists. The Terriers captured three of the first four points before back-to-back kills from Stein and Walch evened the score. Wofford broke the set open courtesy of an 8-3 run to go ahead 11-6, leading to a Paladin timeout. Furman stayed within five points midway when
Kacie Moore's kill put the score at 15-10. The Terriers ended the set outscoring the Paladins 10-4.
Furman concluded the contest hitting .121 overall.
The Paladins return to Alley Gymnasium next weekend, October 17-18, to host Chattanooga and Western Carolina.
