GAINESVILLE, FLA. -- Me'Arah O'Neil scored 22 points and Florida rode a strong fourth quarter to pull away from Furman en route to a 82-66 victory in women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Stephen T. O'Connell Center on campus.
The victory improved the Gators to 12-3 on the season while the Paladins fall to 6-7 with one game remaining before the calender flips into the new year.
O'Neil converted 7-of-10 shots from the field and the same from the free throw line for her 22 points, which she combined with seven rebounds, four blocks, four assists, and three assists in 33 minutes of action to lead Florida, which took advantage of 26 Furman turnovers to post a 33-11 scoring differential off miscues.
Furman was paced by Jacksonville, Fla., native
Clare Coyle, who tallied 20 points, and by
Alyssa Ervin's 18-point performance.
Ervin's second 3-pointer of the contest, with 3:26 to go in the third quarter, pulled Furman to within 51-48, but the Gators answered by outscoring the Paladins 10-5 over the remainder of the quarter to take a 61-53 edge into the final period.
Leading 63-55 a minute into the fourth quarter, the Gators assembled an 11-3 run to go up, 74-58, on layup by Caterina Piatti with 5:09 remaining.
Laila Reynolds followed O'Neal in the scoring column with 17 points, and Liv McGill finished with 12 points and Piatti 10 for Florida, which shot 50 percent from the field (32x64), including 10-of-18 in the fourth quarter.
Furman found the mark on 27-of-64 field goal attempts (42.2%) but struggled at the free throw line, making just 9-of-20 attempts (45.0%).
The Paladins fashioned a 46-36 rebounding advantage, led by
Kyraha Parnell's eight caroms.
Furman plays host to Brevard on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Timmons Arena.
