Greenville, S.C. – Freshman
Kate Stoltzfus belted a three-run, go-ahead home run to lead Furman to a 7-4 victory over Canisius in game two and a doubleheader split with the Golden Griffins Tuesday at Pepsi Stadium. The Golden Griffins took game one, 6-3.
With game two tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning,
Madison Petty and
Sylvia Burroughs opened the frame with back-to-back singles. After a fielder's choice erased the lead runner for the first out of the inning, Stoltzfus launched a three-run blast over the left-center field fence to stake the Paladins to a 5-2 lead.
Canisius trimmed the deficit to 5-4 in the top of the sixth inning as Alyssa Coultier and Ella Johel reached base to open the inning and Bailey Alatorre and Natalie Quonce each delivered an RBI single. With two runners on base and one, sophomore
Angelina Ricciardi came out of the bullpen and induced a line drive double play to end the threat and preserve a one-run lead.
Furman plated a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth before Ricciardi worked around a single in the top of the seventh to retire the Golden Griffins and close out the Paladin victory. The right-hander allowed just one hit in 1.2 innings to notch her first save of the season. Starter
Emme Buzhardt (1-1) limited Canisius to two earned runs on five hits in 5.1 innings to pick up her first win of the campaign.
Petty went 3-for-4 at the plate while Burroughs and
Katie Peeler registered two hits apiece.
Liv Harrington (0-2) took the loss for the Golden Griffins after surrendering five runs on eight hits over three innings. Johel collected two hits in the loss for Canisius.
The Golden Griffins opened the doubleheader with a 6-3 victory in game one. Johel went 3-for-3 with a double and Rosie Gomez blasted her first homer of the season to power Canisius' eight-hit attack.
Canisius scored a pair of runs in the first, third, and fourth innings to build a 6-2 lead and lefty Olivia Manchester tossed a complete game to make the lead stand up. Manchester held Furman to a pair of earned runs on seven hits while fanning five batters without issuing a walk.
Burroughs laced a two-run single for the Paladins in the first inning and Peeler added an RBI base hit in the fourth.
Kiley Perry picked up a pair of hits, but Furman was charged with three errors, three passed balls, three walks, and three wild pitches in the game one.
Starter
Lauralee Scott took the loss for the Paladins after allowing four runs on four hits over three innings in the circle. She walked two batters and struck out five.
