Furman enters the final week of the regular season at 21-8 overall and 9-7 in Southern Conference play. The Paladins can clinch a top six seed in the SoCon Men's Basketball Championship, scheduled for March 7-10 in Asheville, N.C., with a win on Wednesday or a VMI loss. A victory over the Bulldogs, coupled with a win in Saturday's regular season finale at rival Wofford, would guarantee the Paladins at least the No. 5 seed.
This past Saturday, Furman improved to 12-3 at home this season with a 75-71 win over VMI on Senior Day at the Well.
Nick Anderson scored a game-high 22 points and fellow senior
PJay Smith Jr. added 17 points and eight rebounds to help the Paladins hold off a late charge by the Keydets. The victory included 21 assists on 25 made baskets for the Paladins, who rank in the top 20 nationally by averaging over 17 assists per game.
The Citadel comes into Wednesday's match-up at 5-22 overall and 0-16 in league play following a heartbreaking 76-75 loss at Chattanooga on Saturday afternoon. Despite being winless in conference play, the Bulldogs have forced three league games to overtime this season, including Furman's 67-63 come-from-behind win at McAlister Fieldhouse in Charleston, S.C., last month.
Wednesday marks the 223
rd meeting between Furman and The Citadel in the most played rivalry in SoCon history. The Paladins own a 134-88 series lead and have won 16 of the last 18 meetings. Furman boasts a 77-35 series lead in games played in Greenville.
