GREENVILLE, S.C. – Anna Roser broke the Furman women's lacrosse career goals record on Sunday, leading the Paladins to a 20-4 victory over the Mercyhurst Lakers in non-conference action from Paladin Stadium.
Furman, who continues its best start since the 2015 season, remains unbeaten at 4-0 overall. With the loss, Mercyhurst drops to 0-3 on the year.
Roser, a senior from Easton, Md., scored five of her game high seven goals in the first half as the Paladins opened the contest with five straight and built an 8-2 lead after the first 15 minutes. Furman outscored the Lakers 7-1 in the second quarter and led 15-3 at halftime following back-to-back goals from
Sofija Buzelis and
Reynolds Hester over the final six minutes.
The Paladin defense held Mercyhurst scoreless for over 20 minutes before Whitley Easton netted her fourth goal with 1:17 left in the third quarter. Furman began the second half with goals from Buzelis and
Lily Toole before Roser scored the record-breaking goal at the 4:17 mark of the third quarter, giving it an 18-3 lead. Roser followed less than two minutes later with her seventh goal of the afternoon.
Lilly Pons closed out the scoring with 12:33 left in regulation to secure the 16-goal victory for the Paladins.
Roser, who added two caused turnovers and a ground ball in the contest, currently has 153 career goals, surpassing the old program record of 151 held by former teammate
Hannah Dintino (2020-24).
Paige Harman tied Roser with seven points, matching her career high, to lead Furman offensively after scoring twice and dishing out a career best five assists. Toole contributed a career high five goals. Buzelis tallied four points on three goals and an assist while tying her career high of eight draws.
Skylar Hilmer also won a career high seven draws.
The Paladins played all three goalies Sunday in
Madigan Brewer,
Sailor Henderson, and
Sam Melville. Brewer earned the win while Melville registered two saves in her first collegiate appearance.
Easton scored all four goals for the Lakers and goalie Maggie Allen recorded eight saves.
Furman outshot Mercyhurst 40-12 and held a 16-6 advantage in ground balls and 19-9 in draws. The Paladins committed a season low in turnovers for the second straight game, finishing with six.
