Furman Hosts Gardner-Webb Wednesday In Big South Opener

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Furman women's lacrosse team starts Big South Conference play Wednesday when it welcomes the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs to Paladin Stadium for a 7 p.m. opening draw.

Fans can follow the action on www.furmanpaladins.com via live stats. The game is being streamed via paid subscription on ESPN+. Updates will be posted on the Furman women's lacrosse Twitter page (@FUWlax).

The Paladins (6-2, 0-0 Big South) concluded non-conference play last Saturday rallying back for a 13-12 victory over Queens (N.C.) at Paladin Stadium. The win marked the largest comeback in school history and gave Furman its best start through eight games since the program started in 2015. The Paladins outshot the Royals, 30-17, while holding a 17-14 advantage in ground balls and 18-11 in draws. Furman also forced Queens (N.C.) into 19 turnovers.

Sofija Buzelis scored the final two goals, including the game-winner with 22 seconds remaining, to lift the Paladins to the one-goal win against the Royals. Buzelis and Anna Roser paced Furman offensively with five goals apiece while Lilly Pons dished out a career high three assists. Buzelis added a game high five draws along with Paige Harman while picking up two ground balls. Molly Faul tied her season high of three ground balls and four different players caused two turnovers each.

Goalie Sailor Henderson got the start in goal and finished with two saves and one ground ball. Madigan Brewer came on in relief of Henderson right before halftime and picked up the win after holding Queens (N.C.) scoreless over the final 5:54.

Gardner-Webb enters conference play with an 0-8 overall record and is coming off a 13-5 defeat at Xavier on March 13. The Runnin' Bulldogs are under the direction of interim head coach Chris Harris.

Furman and Gardner-Webb are meeting for the eighth time in program history with the Paladins having won each of the past seven matchups.

The Paladins are on the road for the first time in conference play next week when they travel to Wofford and High Point. Furman faces Wofford on April 2 at 6 p.m. and High Point on April 4 at 7:30 p.m.
