No. 36 Furman to Entertain No. 47 Charlotte on Senior Day Friday and Visit SoCon Rival Wofford Sunday

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team will honor seniors Jess Dawson, Alexa Griffith, Marissa Pennings, Ellie Schulson, Sara Snyder, and Grace Thomas prior to Friday's match versus Charlotte at the Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University.  First serve is set for 3 p.m. with the senior day ceremony slated for 1:00 p.m. at the stadium court.

Live results and live video from the matches will be available at https://furmanpaladins.com.

Over the past four seasons, the Paladins have amassed a 22-1 Southern Conference regular season record and have claimed two regular season titles plus one SoCon tournament championship and one NCAA tournament appearance. These seniors were freshmen on the 2022 Paladin team that ranked as high as 19th nationally, a program record. During their time at Furman, they have notched ranked wins over Alabama (twice), Texas Tech, Charlotte, ETSU (twice), Yale, and Rice. This senior class has combined for 11 All-SoCon citations, 13 ITA All-Academic individual awards, and seven CoSIDA Academic All-District Awards.

The Paladins enter Wednesday's match ranked No. 36 nationally with a 13-2 overall record after defeating then No. 42 ranked Rice, 4-2, and Brown, 4-0, this week. Furman sits at 2-0 in Southern Conference play.

Pennings is 10-1 overall in singles to lead the team, while Snyder and Schulson are 10-3 at flight one doubles, and Dawson and sophomore Macy Hitchcock boast a 10-3 mark at flight two doubles.

Charlotte is 15-3 overall and is ranked 47th in this week's national poll after defeating No. 40 Yale and Brown. The 49ers have notched key victories over ranked opponents Tulane, ETSU, Florida Atlantic, and Yale this season. Charlotte won the last meeting, 4-0, when the teams faced off last April at Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. The Paladins lead the all-time series, 11-2.

On Sunday, Furman will travel to Wofford to face the Terriers at noon in Spartanburg, S.C.

Wofford holds a 13-1 overall record and is 2-0 in Southern Conference play. The Terriers are on an eight-match winning streak that includes dominant victories over conference opponents Chattanooga and Mercer. The Paladins won the most recent matchup in Greenville, 6-1, in March 2024.  Furman boasts a 19-0 all-time series record.

The winner of Sunday's match will be awarded the yearly Pinson Cup by Bobby and Dixie Pinson, beloved friends of both the Furman and Wofford programs.  The couple has given a beautiful trophy, which stays with the winning school until the winner of the next season's match is determined, and a generous donation in honor of this rivalry.  The Paladins have been awarded the trophy each year since its inception in 2005.
