BALTIMORE, MD. – Katana Nelson scored a game high six goals to lead the UMBC Retrievers to a 13-11 victory over the Furman women's lacrosse team Sunday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.
Furman drops its first contest of the season and falls to 5-1 overall. UMBC improves to 7-1 on the season.
Lily Toole tied her career high of five goals to lead the Paladins offensively while
Paige Harman contributed four points on two goals and two assists.
Anna Roser provided a hat trick, and
Sofija Buzelis totaled a goal and assist.
Skylar Hilmer won a team best six draws. Three different players had a ground ball and caused turnover.

Sailor Henderson came off the bench to finish with six saves.
Nelson led UMBC with six goals, three caused turnovers, and two ground balls. Lizzie Bateman dished out two assists. In goal, Isabella Fontana recorded three saves.
Furman trailed the Retrievers, 9-6, with just over nine minutes to go in the third quarter before reeling off three consecutive goals over the last 7:07. Roser and Harman combined for all three goals with Roser's second of the period tying the score at 9-9 at the 1:26 mark. UMBC made it 10-9 with 20 seconds remaining before Toole netted her fifth of the game with just one second left to put the score at 10-10 heading to the fourth.
The Retrievers outscored the Paladins 3-1 in the fourth quarter to secure the 13-11 victory. UMBC scored three straight goals over a stretch of 3:30 to break the tie and lead 13-10. Nelson's final goal gave the Retrievers a three-goal lead with 4:30 remaining in the game. Roser netted Furman's final goal with 2:32 to go.
The teams traded the first six goals of the contest before UMBC used a 5-2 run to hold an 8-5 advantage at halftime.
The Paladins concluded the contest with 22 shots, 13 ground balls, and 11 draws while forcing the Retrievers into 11 turnovers.
Furman is back in action on Saturday, March 15 when it heads to Tempe, Ariz., for a 3 p.m. EST draw against Arizona State.
