GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Furman women's lacrosse team had seven individuals earn postseason recognition from the Big South Conference on Thursday while four received yearly awards, it was announced by the league office.
Senior attack
Anna Roser was named the Big South Co-Offensive Player of the Year while senior midfielder
Paige Harman garnered Midfielder of the Year accolades. Freshman attack
Lily Toole was voted the Freshman of the Year and first-year head coach
Gail Wallach collected Coach of the Year honors.
Roser and Harman were joined on first team All-Big South by senior midfielder
Sofija Buzelis. Toole picked up second team All-Big South citation along with senior defender
Andrea Fisher and junior defender
Skylar Hilmer. Harman also earned a spot on the All-Academic Team.
Roser, a native of Easton, Md., turned in one of the best offensive performances for a season in school history this year, leading the team with 76 goals and ranked second with 95 points after dishing out 19 assists. The Big South Preseason Offensive Player of the Year led the Big South in goals and was third in points. Furman's all-time leader in both points and goals, Roser netted five game-winning goals to go with 17 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers. She has scored in every game this year including three or more in all but one contest. She registered a season high seven goals twice and eight points four times. Roser's 212 career goals are tied for second-most in Big South history and her 268 points rank fourth. She was named Big South Offensive Player of the Week on March 3.
Harman, who hails from Fairport, N.Y., recorded the top offensive showing in program history this season setting a school single-season record of 100 points on 50 goals and 50 assists. She led the Big South in assists while sitting second in points and seventh in goals. Harman added 63 draws, third-most on the team, 14 ground balls, and seven caused turnovers. A three-time Big South Offensive Player of the Week selection, she tallied 13 multi-goal games and set new career highs for points, goals, and assists in a game. Harman tied the school single-game points record of 12 at Radford and scored a career best seven goals in a road win at Mercer. She totaled a career high seven assists in back-to-back wins over Presbyterian and Radford.
Toole finished with the best offensive season by a freshman in program history, posting 80 points on 61 goals and 19 assists after starting in all 17 games. The Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., native broke the school single-season freshman record for points, goals, and assists while ranking tied for second on the team in assists, and second in both goals and points. Toole was second in the Big South in goals and fourth in points. She broke the school single-game points record in a 20-18 win at Wofford after finishing with career highs of 12 points, eight goals, and four assists. Toole was named Big South Freshman of the Week six times and Offensive Player of the Week once.
Wallach led the Paladins to a school-record 14 victories during her first season in Greenville and guided the program to the Big South Co-Regular Season Championship for the first time in program history. Furman leads the conference this year in goals, assists, and points, and ranks fifth nationally in scoring offense. The Paladins have set school records for points, goals, assists, and draws.
A native of Willowbrook, Ill., Buzelis started in all 17 games this season and ranks fourth on the team in scoring with 69 points on 55 goals and 14 assists. She became the program's all-time and single-season draws leader this season after leading the conference with 108. Buzelis set new career highs in points, goals, and draws while tying her career best in assists. A preseason All-Big South pick, she totaled nine points in a win over Longwood after scoring seven goals and winning 14 draws. Buzelis registered 14 multi-goal games and double digit draws in two.
Hilmer, who transferred to Furman this season from Eastern Michigan, has started in all 17 games for Furman and is second on the team with 76 draws. The San Diego, Calif., native adds eight points on five goals and three assists while contributing 14 ground balls and nine caused turnovers. She has scored four of her five goals in the past two games against Winthrop and Gardner-Webb and tied her career high of three goals in the 22-9 win versus Winthrop. Hilmer won a career high nine draws twice against Wofford and Mercer.
Fisher became the Paladins' all-time caused turnover leader this year and leads the team with 25. A native of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Fisher started in all 17 games on defense and ranks second on the team with 24 ground balls. In Tuesday's victory over Gardner-Webb to open the Big South Women's Lacrosse Championship, she set a new career high with five caused turnovers and tied her career best of five ground balls. Fisher contributed four ground balls during a win against Delaware State and caused four turnovers during a home victory over Presbyterian.
