Furman Holds Off Georgia State For First Victory, 2-1

Paladins Hosts Bob Jones On Friday At 7 P.M.

Greenville, S.C. – Sophomores Dylan Daniels and Jaleah Simmons netted goals to propel Furman past Georgia State, 2-1, in non-conference women's soccer action Sunday evening on Seagraves Field at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.

The Paladins grabbed the advantage in the 33rd minute on Daniels' first career goal. The Paladins earned a free kick just outside the box and the cross to the far post was headed away by a Georgia State defender. Freshman Callah Dando intercepted the clearance and fed a ball into the center of the box that Daniel struck inside the right post at the 32:57 mark to break the deadlock.

Furman doubled its lead on 59 minutes when the Paladins took advantage of a Panthers turnover and Maddie Massie redirected the ball behind the Georgia State back line to set Simmons free. The Duncan, S.C., native won the race to the ball and slotted a shot past Panther goalkeeper Ariana Anderson and into the right corner to up the margin to 2-0.

Georgia State mounted a comeback in the final 30 minutes and halved the lead at 65:59 when Sunniyah Tucker dribbled free in the midfield and curled a long shot over Paladin goalkeeper Reese DeJong from outside the box. The Panthers continued to apply the pressure, but Furman's back line helped DeJong absorb the pressure and finish off the first victory of the season.

"Tonight was a solid victory for us against a talented Georgia State team," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr. "Dylan and Jaleah each scored a nice goal, and our defense did a terrific job down the stretch. We'll work to recover and get our legs back under us as we prepare for another two-game stretch this week with Bob Jones and Charleston Southern."

DeJong, who recorded seven saves in the season opener versus South Florida on Thursday, stopped six shots against the Panthers. Anderson totaled two saves for Georgia State in a losing effort.

The Panthers (1-1-0) finished with a 16-8 margin in total shots and 7-4 edge in shots on goal.

Furman (1-1-0) continues its homestand on Friday night when it hosts the Bob Jones Bruins on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the match will be streamed love on ESPN+.
