Greenville, S.C. – College of Charleston's Noah Gold scored on a set piece in the 44
th minute to help the Cougars edge No. 3 Furman, 1-0, in midweek soccer action Tuesday evening on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium
The loss marked the first of the season for Furman as the Paladins slipped to 4-1-3. College of Charleston upped its record to 3-4-1.
The Cougars drew a foul several yards outside the top of the box with less than two minutes left in the first half and Gold stepped up to drill a right-footed free kick into the lower right-hand corner at the 43:36 mark for his first goal of the season.
Furman controlled a majority of possession over the final 45 minutes and outshot the Cougars 9-2 in the second half, but the Paladins were unable to find the equalizer. The best chance to level the match came less than 10 minutes after the restart as
Gabe Cox found space on the right side of the box but his low, driven strike was smothered by Charleston's Jourdan Schumacher.
Gianluca Rizzo and
Ryan Wagner also forced second-half saves by Schumacher, who earned the shutout for the Cougars.
"It was a disappointing result tonight, but we will go back to the drawing board," said Paladin head coach
Doug Allison. "Anybody can beat anybody on a given night in college soccer. Congratulations to Charleston and coach Keith Wiggans. He's a class-act."
The Paladins finished with a 14-5 advantage in total shot attempts and 3-2 margin in shots on goal in the loss.
Furman returns to action on Monday when it hosts Charlotte on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Paladins compiled an 8-4 edge in corner kicks, including seven in the second half.
