Spartanburg, S.C. – The Furman women's soccer team rallied from an early deficit to grab a second half lead, but was forced to settle for a 2-2 draw with USC Upstate in non-conference action Thursday night at County University Stadium.
USC Upstate (2-3-1) opened the scoring in the ninth minute after a Furman turnover in the midfield. Savannah Noll played a pass down the middle to free Dara Russo behind the back line and the forward placed a shot into the lower left-hand corner to put the Spartans ahead 1-0.
Furman (4-1-1) leveled the match with less than five minutes left in the first half.
Jessica Mattson's run into the box earned the Paladins a corner kick and
Ellie Herrmann lofted the set piece over the goalkeeper's head for
Alyssa England to head in at the back post.
The Paladins grabbed the lead at the 52:38 mark when Herrmann raced down the right flank before sending a pass ahead to
Bri Pinasco. The junior curled a cross to the top of the six-yard box where
Emma Sexton headed a shot inside the near post to give Furman a 2-1 advantage.
Following a lightning delay near the hour mark, the Spartans found a late equalizer on Russo's second goal of the night. After winning a loose ball near the top of the Paladins' box, Russo chipped a shot that caught Furman goalkeeper
Reese DeJong off her line and bounced into the left side of the empty net at the 82:14 mark.
Furman threatened to steal all three points in the waning moments, but a Paladin corner that fell inside the six-yard box was cleared out of danger and Upstate's Madison Ejgird made a diving stop on Sexton's one-timer from the top of the box moments later to preserve the draw.
The Paladins closed the match with a 12-11 edge in total shots and 5-4 advantage in shots on goal while compiling an 8-4 margin in corner kicks. DeJong stopped two shots and Ejgird posted three saves.
Furman is back in action on Sunday afternoon when it travels to Davidson. Kickoff at Alumni Stadium in Davidson, N.C., is slated for 2 p.m.
