GREENVILLE, S.C. --
Chantelle Stuart poured in 26 points and
Alyssa Ervin followed with 24 points to spark a powerful second half comeback that carried Furman past UNC Greensboro, 69-56, in Southern Conference women's basketball action Thursday evening at Timmons Arena.
The victory halted a seven-game winning streak by reigning SoCon champion UNCG (12-6, 2-1 SoCon) and the Spartans' seven game series run of success versus Furman (10-8, 2-1 SoCon).
Forced to contend without injured starting forward
Kyraha Parnell and her replacement,
Channing Warren, who exited the floor with an injury midway thru the second quarter, Furman head coach
Pierre Curtis went with a smaller lineup in the second half. Â The result proved dramatic as the Paladins, who trailed 35-25 at intermission, used four 3-pointers, including two from
Lauren Bailey, to power a 17-0 third quarter run and grab a 42-37 lead following a Stuart trey with three minutes remaining in the period.
Stuart helped Furman maintain control in the fourth quarter, scoring seven of her nine points in the period in one strech to give the Paladins a 56-51 lead with five minutes to go. Bailey extended it to 59-51 with a wing 3-pointer at the 2:29 mark.
Stuart, a sophomore guard whose previous career scoring high had been 15 points in a 55-51 loss at UNCG a year ago, tallied 19 of her 26 points in the second and finished the game going 9-of-19 from the field, including 2-of-5 from 3-point range, and 6-of-7 at the free throw line.
Ervin, making only her fourth start of the campaign, topped her previous career high of 22 points versus Mars Hill earlier this season by making 5-of-10 shots from the field, including 4-of-6 3-pointers. Â The sophomore guard also converted 10-of-11 free throws and added four rebounds and three steals.
Stuart and Ervin combined to score 16 of the Paladins' 23 fourth quarter points.
Furman finished the contest hitting on 9-of-20 shots (45.0%) from beyond the arc and outrebounded UNCG 40-32, including 14-7 on the offensive glass.
Clare Coyle, the SoCon's top rebounder, led the way with 15 caroms, which followed her 16-rebound performance last Saturday at Chattanooga.
The Spartans connected on just 2-of-11 shots in the decisive third quarter and ended the game shooting 37.3 percent from the field (19x51).
Jaila Lee paced UNCG with 17 points, and Makiah Asidanya followed with 15.
Furman plays host to Western Carolina on Saturday in a 2:00 p.m. contest.
