Furman vs. The Citadel Game Notes

Greenville, S.C. – The Southern Conference schedule sends Furman men's basketball on a two-game road swing this week, beginning with a Wednesday night clash against instate rival The Citadel.

Tip-off at McAlister Field House in Charleston, S.C., is slated for 7 p.m. and the renewal of the SoCon's most-played rivalry will be streamed live on ESPN+. Fans can also listen to Dan Scott and Tom Van Hoy call the action on The Fan Upstate at 97.7 FM and 1330 AM in Greenville, 97.1 FM and 1490 AM in Spartanburg, and via the Audacy app. Links for the broadcast, live audio, and live statistics are available at FurmanPaladins.com.

Furman is looking to bounce back from a heartbreaking 74-70 home loss to Wofford on Saturday at Timmons Arena. The Terriers rallied from a 59-46 second half deficit with a 17-0 run to edge the Paladins, who were down to six healthy scholarship players by the end of the game. Nils Machowski and Khamare Holmes led Wofford with 20 points each while freshman Alex Wilkins paced the Paladins with 19 points.

Saturday's loss dropped the Paladins to 13-6 overall and 4-2 in league play. Wilkins leads Furman averaging 17.6 points and 5.0 assists per game. He and Arkansas guard Darius Acuff Jr. stand as the only two rookies to rank in the top 10 in both scoring and assists per game among freshmen.

Wednesday's game marks the 224th meeting between the Paladins and Bulldogs with Furman holding a 135-88 series advantage. The Paladins have prevailed in each of the last four meetings, including a pair of overtime decision in their two most recent visits to Charleston. Last season, Nick Anderson scored 23 points and Ben Vander Wal converted on four overtime free throws to help the Paladins pull out a 67-63 victory in Charleston. Furman rolled to an 85-42 win over the Bulldogs in the most recent meeting in February at Bon Secours Wellness Arena behind 19 points apiece from PJay Smith Jr. and Tom House.

The Citadel is coming off a road win over VMI on Saturday and enters Wednesday night's game at 5-14 overall and 2-4 in SoCon play.

Following Wednesday's game, Furman is scheduled to travel to UNC Greensboro for a 5 p.m. tilt on Saturday at Bodford Arena on the UNCG campus. The Paladins are back in Greenville to host Samford on CBS Sports Network on Thursday, January 29.
