Furman Women's Soccer Blanks ETSU, 2-0

Paladins Maintain Share Of First Place

Johnson City, Tenn. – Maddie Massie and Marlie Nagle each netted a goal and Furman rans its unbeaten streak to eight consecutive matches with a 2-0 victory over the ETSU Buccaneers in Southern Conference women's soccer action Friday night at Summers-Taylor Stadium.

With the shutout victory, Furman improved to 11-3-3 overall and maintained a share of first place in the league standings at 6-0-2. The Bucs slipped to 8-5-2 overall and 5-2-1 in league play.

Massie, a senior from Birmingham, Ala., put the Paladins in front in the 21st minute. Ellie Herrmann served a long cross to the far-left post and Katie Villiger headed the ball back into the middle of the box for Massie to tuck away at the 20:20 mark.

Nagle doubled the Paladin lead less than eight minutes before the halftime break. The freshman and Wao High School product pressed the ETSU back ling and stole the ball before finishing her opportunity in the box to double the Furman lead at 37:42.

Junior Reese DeJong saved six shots in goal to secure her second straight shutout and sixth of the season.

"Every SoCon win is something to celebrate, especially when it comes on the road against a quality opponent," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr. "We were able to generate a couple of goals in the first half and the defense did an excellent job all night long."

ETSU held a 13-9 advantage in total shot attempts and 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Addison Yelton recorded three saves for the Bucs.

Furman travels to face the Mercer Bears at Betts Stadium in Macon, Ga., on Thursday night before concluding the regular season at home against Western Carolina at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 1.
