Mount Pleasant, S.C. – College of Charleston's Stian Bendvold scored a pair of second half goals to rally the Cougars past Furman men's soccer, 2-1, in non-conference play Tuesday evening on Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point.
Senior
Jack Travis scored in the 36
th minute on assists from
Braden Dunham and
Luke Hutzell to break a scoreless tie and give the Paladins a 1-0 lead at the half. Furman recorded the first nine shots of the match and outshot CofC 9-1 over the opening 45 minutes.
Charleston (7-2-2) evened the match in the 53
rd minute when Henrik Boer played a long ball down the center of the pitch and a miscommunication allowed Bendvold to win the race to the ball before firing a shot into the back of the net from a tight angle. Bendvold struck again with the eventual game-winning goal just over 11 minutes later. Kira Fukuda found the forward with a pass and Bendvold buried a right-footed strike into the corner at 63:30 to stake the Cougars to a 2-1 advantage.
Furman (3-3-4) posted eight shots over the final 25 minutes, but CofC's Martin Brink was tested just once down the stretch on a
Mason Peacock shot. Brink finished with three saves to earn the victory in goal. The Paladins'
Aaron Salinas stopped two shots on the night.
Charleston compiled a 5-4 edge in shots on target despite the Paladins holding an 18-6 advantage in total shot attempts.
