Troy, Ala. – Troy belted three home runs en route to scoring 12 runs in five innings as the Trojans downed Furman, 12-4, in the finale of the Trojan Invitational Sunday afternoon at the Troy Softball Complex.
The top two hitters in the Trojan batting order, McKinnon Howard and Makaley Boswell combined to go 6-for-7 at the plate with a double, homer, and eight RBI to help Troy improve to 12-2 on the season. Boswell, who drove in six runs on the day, hammered a two-run homer to left field to open the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. After
Katie Peeler and
Ansley Chiang each batted in a run to pull the Paladins even at 2-2 in the top of the second, Kalee Rochinski restored the Trojan lead with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the frame before Howard and Boswell batted in runs to extend the Troy lead to 5-2.
Kamryn Munson homered to leadoff the bottom of the third inning for Troy ahead of RBI singles from Howard and Boswell that keyed a four-run outburst to put the Trojans in front 9-2 after three innings. Furman's
Kristyn Embler launched her first career home run, a two-run shot to left field, in the top of the fifth, but Boswell doubled to drive in two more Troy runs in the bottom of the innings before Dailyn Motes' RBI single triggered the mercy rule.
Boswell finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, homer, and six RBI while Howard went 3-for-3 and scored four times. Emma Banks (2-1) tossed two shutout innings of relief and fanned three batters to earn the win in the circle for the Trojans.
Embler went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Paladins while Peeler and
Sylvia Burroughs each collected two hits. Starter
Jamison Noonan (0-5) suffered the loss in the circle after allowing five runs on six hits in two innings of work.
Furman (1-13) travels to Spartanburg, S.C., to face USC Upstate in a midweek doubleheader on Friday at 3 p.m.
