GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Furman women's tennis team downed the UNC Greensboro Spartans, 7-0, in Southern Conference action Saturday afternoon at UNCG Tennis Courts.
The win improves the Paladins to 10-4 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The loss moved UNC Greensboro to 1-13 on the year and 0-3 in the SoCon.
Furman jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over the Spartans after sweeping all three doubles matches.
Bianca Ceroni and
Macy Hitchcock won at flight two doubles for the Paladins, 6-1, over Sydney Bly and Sofia Somoano.
Lillie Murphy and
Elle Warren clinched the doubles point for the Paladins, downing Sophia Cedeno and Lauren Thomson, 6-3, competing at flight one.
Lily Doherty and
Molly Robinson also won at flight three doubles when they took down Kayley Bushnell and Ivet Sala-Sanchez, 6-3.
In singles, Murphy helped extend the Furman lead when she defeated Sara Kostic, 6-0, 6-1, playing at flight two. At flight six, Robinson then topped Somoano in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Hitchcock picked up another win at flight three defeating Thomson, 6-4, 6-1. In the flight four contest, Ceroni posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Bushnell. Warren won, 6-3, 6-2, against Cedeno at flight one. Doherty closed out the match at flight five winning in three sets versus Bly, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5), to complete the 7-0 sweep for the Paladins.
Furman will continue SoCon play on Tuesday afternoon when it travels to Macon, Ga., to take on Mercer at 2:30 p.m. Live scoring and live statistics for the match will be available on the Furman website.
