Softball Drops Two Versus ETSU On Saturday Afternoon

Series Finale Set For 1 P.M. Sunday On ESPN+

Greenville, S.C. – East Tennessee State totaled 28 runs over two games to claim a 21-2, 7-2 doubleheader sweep of Furman in Southern Conference softball action Saturday afternoon at Pepsi Stadium.
 
Game 1: ETSU 21, Furman 2 (6 inn.)
 
ETSU plated four runs in the first inning and posted a 14-run top of the sixth to cruise to a 21-2 victory in the opening game of the series. 
 
Whitney Boone went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a homer, and drove in four runs to lead the Bucs to their first SoCon victory. Peyton Moore, 3-for-4 on the day, added a pair of doubles and drive in two runs while Leilani Coleman Tillman also collected three hits and batted in two runs.
 
ETSU benefitted from 12 walks issued by the Paladin pitching staff, including six bases loaded free passes in game one. Furman starter Lily O'Bryan (1-7) suffered the loss surrendering 16 runs on 13 hits and eight walks over 5.1 innings.
 
Taylor Suchy (4-2) limited the Paladins to one earned run on seven hits over five innings to earn the victory. Gabby Fowler came on in relief to pitch a perfect inning.
 
AB Cipalla finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Paladins. Rachel Hawkins singled to drive in Furman's other run.
 
Game 2: ETSU 7, Furman 2
 
In game two, ETSU broke open a 1-1 score with four runs in the top of the third inning en route to a 7-2 triumph.
 
Leinani Lutu's homer put the Buccaneers in front in the top of the second before Katie Peeler tripled and scored on Ansley Chiang's single in the bottom of the frame to even the game at 1-1. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for ETSU in the top of the third and Lutu laced a double into the gap to clear the bases before scoring on a Paladin error to up the Bucs' lead to 5-1.
 
Kate Stoltzfus drove in Eden Frederick with a single in the bottom of the third, but ETSU responded with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings for the final margin.
 
Catlin Pennington (4-2) held Furman to a pair of runs on five hits over four innings to pick up the victory. Eden Muncy relieved Pennington and tossed three shutout innings of one-hit ball to earn her first save of the season.
 
Lutu finished 2-for-3 with four RBI while Coleman-Tillmann added two hits for the Bucs.
 
Freshman Jamison Noonan (0-8) took the loss for Furman after allowing six runs on five hits over four innings in the circle. She walked four batters without recording a strikeout.
 
The three-game series between the Paladins and Bucs concludes with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission to Sunday's game is free. The contest will also be streamed live on ESPN+.
