GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman downed Virginia Tech, 4-2, Sunday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
The 67th-ranked Paladins move to 8-3 with the win, while Virginia Tech falls to 3-6 with the loss. Â
The Hokies came into the match with five players, so Furman needed just one doubles win to secure the opening point. Freshmen Lillie Murphy and Elle Warren, who rank 34th nationally, topped 51st-ranked Arina Gamretkaia and Ozlem Uslu, 6-4, to deliver the point for the Paladins. Â
Furman scored by forfeit at flight six singles to take a 2-0 lead, but Virginia Tech picked up a point at flight four when Elizaveta Castillo won by retirement over Bianca Ceroni, 3-2, in the first set. Murphy recorded a 6-3, 6-2 advantage over Gamretkaia at flight two to push the Paladin lead to 3-1 before Uslu came from behind to defeat Warren, 1-6, 6-2, 6-0, in the top-seeded contest and pull the Hokies within one. Freshman Sasha Dimitrov then rallied to beat Mila Mulready, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3, and clinch the victory for Furman, 4-2.Â
The flight five match was unfinished, with Furman junior Macy Hitchcock leading Linda Ziets-Segura, 6-1, 4-1.
The Paladins will entertain Elon Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center.
