Greensboro, N.C. – UNC Greensboro claimed 8-0 and 11-2 victories over Furman on Friday afternoon at UNC Softball Stadium to maintain its hold on first place in the Southern Conference standings.
Game 1: UNCG 8, Furman 0 (6 inn.)
Brooklyn Shroyer fanned 10 batters over five shutout innings and Rylie Williams drove in three runs to send UNCG to an 8-0 victory in the opening game of the weekend.
Williams broke a scoreless tie with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the third inning to provide all the offense Shroyer would need. The Spartans' starter in the circle scattered three hits over five scoreless innings of work, struck out 10 batters and walked just one on her way to improving to 14-4 on the year.
After Madelyn McKinnon upped the UNCG lead to 3-0 with a solo homer to center field in the fourth inning, the Spartans blew the game open with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Two batters reached on one-out hits against Paladin starter
Jamison Noonan before
Gwen Hill came out of the Furman bullpen. Back-to-back walks forced in a run before another scampered home on a wild pitch. Jazmin Mejia singled to drive in the sixth run and the seventh crossed the plate when the base hit was misplayed in left field.
UNCG forced the run rule in the bottom of the sixth inning when Hill walked the bases loaded before plunking Williams to dive in the final run. Macy Michael collected two of UNCG's seven hits while Williams batted in three runs.
Noonan (0-9) allowed five runs on six hits over 4,1 innings to absorb the loss. Sophomore
Katie Peeler went 1-for-1 at the plate with a single and walk.
Game 2: UNCG 11, Furman 2 (5 inn.)
UNCG (27-13, 8-0 SoCon) clubbed four home runs, including a pair from Deane Laney, to cruise to an 11-2 victory in game two of Friday's doubleheader.
Laney belted two-run blasts in each of the first two innings to help the Spartans open up a 7-0 lead. Williams and pinch hitter Chrissy Rabenold joined the longball parade to power a four-run outburst in the bottom of the third to extend the UNCG advantage to 11-0.
